5 Questions with Bertie Taylor

1. Can you please introduce yourself, where are you from, how long you shoot on film?

My name is Bertie Taylor, I grew up on the south coast in East Sussex, UK and now split my time between there and London. I have been shooting film for about eighteen months.

2. Why do you like to shoot on film?

I have enjoyed shooting on film because it feels a little more real and tangible. Digital has it’s virtues but there’s just something about film which you can’t replicate on digital, the depth of colour you can get, the mood, cinematic look etc. As I’m sure many others have mentioned, the process is also enjoyable and reminds me to slow down a little, there’s something almost meditative about it.

3. What’s your favorite gear to use (camera, lens, film)?

My dad handed me down his untouched Mamiya RZ67. It was literally brand new, having never been opened. I also use an Olympus OM1 with a 50mm lens.

One of my images which has been pretty popular and is probably one of my favourites is the one of a girl’s eyes in a piece of glass with blues skies behind. It was one of those images that just turned out really well without much thought and preparation, It was very quick and instinctive and the result turned out really well.

5. Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs?

I don’t actually want to say too much, that’s the way I like it, I prefer the viewer to make up their own mind about the image and what it says to them.
