5 Questions with Izzy Burns

1. Can you please introduce yourself, where are you from, how long you shoot on film?

My name is Izzy Burns and I’m from Perth, Western Australia. I’ve been into film photography for just over a year now.

2. Why do you like to shoot on film?

I love how the end result looks and I find the whole process of having to wait before you can see the outcome really exciting. In general, I love photography because it puts me into situations that I wouldn’t normally be in; it allows me to meet new people and express some of my creativity.

3. What’s your favorite gear to use (camera, lens, film) ?

At the moment I use two 35mm cameras, a Minolta X-370 with a 50mm F2 lens and a point and shoot Nikon L35AF 2. The Nikon was the first film camera I ever bought which I think was really good for me because in the beginning it allowed me to just focus on the basic things like composition without worrying about all the technicalities. I also use a 120mm Mamiya RB67 with a 90mm F3.8 lens that I really love. It took me a while to get used to but now I have a strong appreciation for the bulky machine.

4. Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

At the moment it’s probably this one of my good friend Emilee taken at a public swimming pool at around 6am in the morning. This is my favourite because firstly I’m obsessed with how it turned out and secondly it reminds me of why I love photography so much, which is how it forces me into situations and places that I wouldn’t normally be in at that time without photography. Also, we were getting lots of strange looks and remarks from the swimmers and the employees as to why we were there so it’s a funny memory to look back on.

5. Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs?

I’m not really sure to be honest. I think I just want to capture other people’s beauty in many different forms because I struggle with accepting myself and I’ve always had a strong appreciation for the unique beauty of others.
